Moleskine is not leather (and why that matters for your next order)
Here's the conclusion I wish more corporate buyers asked me before placing a notebook order: a classic Moleskine notebook is not leather. The cover is bookbinding board wrapped in a water-resistant oilcloth finish, and the paper is acid-free ivory paper at around 70 gsm. That material combo is not an accident. It's designed to be slim, lightweight, and professional. If someone is selling you a "leather Moleskine journal," the word leather is not a spec. It's the beginning of a question.
The short version: a classic Moleskine notebook is not made of leather. It might look like a leather journal from across a conference table, but it behaves differently. It won't patina, it won't soften and crease the way leather does, and it won't be as forgiving if your client wants an embossed logo. For many corporate orders, that's fine. For some, it's a mismatch.
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a stationery supplier. I review 200+ custom-branded items every year. These are not the same products, and they are not the same price. Bonded leather is not inherently evil. But if you describe it as "premium leather" and the client expected full-grain, you have a problem.
In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: I trusted a catalog description. I ordered 1,200 "leather Moleskine journals" for an executive gifting program. After delivery, the client's team flagged the cover material. It was bonded leather, not full-grain as the sales sheet implied. We had to replace the order and absorb the cost. Can you use acrylic paint on wood? Yes, if you prep it
The exact question clients ask their creative teams is "can you use acrylic paint on wood?" The answer is yes. Acrylic is water-based, flexible enough for wood, and easy to clean up. But wood is not a sealed surface. It has grain, pores, and uneven absorbency. If you paint a logo directly onto a raw wood cover, the paint will bleed into the grain and scuff off after a few weeks.
- Sand the surface to 220 grit.
- Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth or a damp lint-free cloth.
- Apply a wood primer, or if the grain is open, thin the first coat of acrylic with 10–15% water.
- Paint in thin, even coats. Let each coat dry before the next.

Acrylic paint is not a finish. The finish is the sealer. That distinction matters if you're shipping wooden promotional items. A painted wood piece that isn't sealed can look fine in the office and arrive ruined after sitting in a truck.
If the surface isn't wood, the same rule applies in reverse: an oilcloth Moleskine cover is much less porous. Acrylic paint on oilcloth sits on top and chips off. A leather journal cover is different again—dye or leather paint works better than regular acrylic. In every case, the material determines the method.

Likewise, if you're painting a wooden shelf in your garage, you can skip the formal primer-and-seal routine and just test on scrap wood first. The real rule is simple: know what you're buying, know what you're promising, and match the two.
One more boundary: "acid-free" is not the same as "archival." Acid-free paper is a good starting point for important documents, but archival quality also depends on storage, humidity, and the materials around the paper. If that distinction matters for your project, ask for a full test report rather than assuming a notebook is permanent just because it says acid-free on the product page.
That's why I keep saying the material is the most important line on the spec sheet. The brand gets your attention. The spec gets your shipment approved.
